What Smartphone Drop-Resistance Tests Really Tell You
A standardized repeated free-fall test can tell you how a model performs under a defined, repeatable impact test. It cannot guarantee that your particular phone will survive a particular fall onto concrete, a stair edge or another unpredictable surface.

What is the repeated free-fall test?
The applicable framework measures resistance to accidental drops through a standardized repeated free-fall procedure.
For smartphones, the referenced test uses repeated falls under defined conditions, including a 1-metre fall height for the smartphone procedure. Multiple units of the same model are tested rather than relying on a single lucky or unlucky sample.
The regulation defines the result as the number of falls that are successfully passed by the required majority of the tested units.
That matters because a standardized class is based on a repeatable procedure, not a single promotional drop video.
What does "falls without defect" mean?
The source field is not a prediction of how many times you personally can drop a phone.
It is the count achieved under the standardized repeated free-fall procedure before the defined defect criterion is reached.
A model with a higher compatible test count has stronger evidence on that specific test than a model with a lower count.
The safe interpretation is:
This model withstood more repeated standardized free-fall events without defect than the other model in the same compatible cohort.
The unsafe interpretation is:
This phone can be dropped exactly 270 times in real life without breaking.
Real accidents vary in orientation, surface, edge impact, installed accessories, prior damage and many other factors.
What do classes A, B, C and D mean for non-foldable smartphones?
For non-foldable smartphones, the official class thresholds are based on falls without defect:

For smartphones, the non-foldable class table stops at D. Slate tablets and foldable devices have different thresholds/conditions.
FactRated therefore does not force all raw fall counts into one universal ranking.
Why foldable smartphones must be separated
Foldable devices are tested with conditions that account for more than one physical state. The applicable class framework considers results in unextended and fully extended states, with different thresholds from non-foldable smartphones.
That makes a raw number from a foldable unsuitable for a simplistic comparison against a conventional slab phone.
FactRated may show the official foldable class and relevant source values, but raw ranking pages must keep compatible device/test groups separate.
This is a good example of why a larger database does not automatically make a better comparison: the test definition matters as much as the number.
Drop resistance is not scratch resistance
A display can be hard to scratch and still crack under a strong impact.
Likewise, a phone can perform well in repeated free-fall testing but have a lower screen scratch-hardness value.

They all relate to durability, but they describe different risks.

Drop resistance is not ingress protection either
IP protection measures resistance to ingress from solids/dust and water under standardized conditions.
It does not measure impact survival.
A phone can be IP68 and still rank lower in repeated free-fall testing than another IP68 phone. That is why the model page should show the fields side by side rather than presenting one generic "ruggedness" badge.
What the test does not reproduce
A standardized free-fall test cannot recreate every real-world accident.
Examples of things it does not guarantee include:
- an edge-first impact on a sharp stair;
- a fall from a height far above the standardized test;
- impact after previous structural damage;
- a device with a cracked frame or weakened seal;
- damage caused by an accessory or object between the device and the floor;
- every possible surface material.
This limitation is not a flaw in standardized testing. Standardization deliberately reduces variation so models can be compared under the same procedure.
Use the result as comparative evidence, not an insurance policy.
Why multiple tested units matter
A single-device demonstration can be misleading. Manufacturing tolerances and impact orientation can affect an individual result.
The regulatory procedure uses multiple units and a defined pass approach, reducing the risk that one unusually strong or weak device determines the model's result.
That makes the data more useful for comparison than a one-off social-media stunt, although it still does not describe every field failure mode.
How to choose a physically durable phone
If durability is a priority, check at least four separate measurements:
1. Repeated free-fall reliability
Use class and compatible raw count.
2. Screen scratch resistance
Useful for surface abrasion, not impact strength.
3. Ingress protection
Useful for dust/water exposure, not falls.
4. Repairability
If damage does happen, a more repairable device can be easier to keep in service.
Add battery-cycle durability and software support if you also care about long ownership.
Frequently asked questions
Does a class A phone survive every drop?
No. Class A means the model meets the highest class threshold under the standardized repeated free-fall framework for its applicable device/test type. Real accidents can be different.
Why does FactRated exclude foldables from the raw non-foldable ranking?
Because foldables have different test states and class thresholds. Mixing the raw counts would imply that the measurements are identical when they are not.
Is 270 falls a guarantee that my phone survives 270 drops?
No. It is a standardized test result, not a personal-use warranty.
Is drop resistance the same as screen hardness?
No. Repeated free-fall reliability measures impact-related performance under the defined test. Screen scratch hardness measures resistance to scratching.
Does a protective case change the official result?
The registered value belongs to the tested model under the defined procedure. A case can affect real-world outcomes but does not change the official source value shown by FactRated.
