How Many Battery Cycles Are Good for a Smartphone?
For covered smartphones in the EU framework, 800 full charge/discharge cycles is an important baseline, because the ecodesign rules require sufficiently durable batteries to retain at least 80% of their initial/rated capacity after the applicable cycle requirement. Some registered models declare higher cycle endurance — for example 1,000, 1,200, 1,400 or more.
A higher cycle rating can be useful if you plan to keep a phone for years, but the number needs to be interpreted correctly. It is not a countdown to sudden battery failure, and the registered figure is a standardized laboratory durability result — not a live counter of how many times an owner has plugged in a charger.

What the registered cycle number actually measures
The EU framework defines battery endurance in cycles as the number of charge/discharge cycles the battery withstands until usable electrical capacity reaches 80% of rated capacity. The battery is tested using the manufacturer's default charging algorithms, and the reported result is rounded down to full hundreds.
That makes the number useful for comparing models under one defined durability framework. It should not be used as a direct count of your personal charging sessions. Real phones can be charged partially, topped up at different battery levels and used under conditions that do not reproduce the regulatory test.
FactRated therefore compares the registered cycle endurance between models, but does not try to estimate your personal cycle count from how often you connect a charger.
What the 80% threshold means
Battery endurance in cycles is measured until the battery's usable capacity reaches the defined threshold of 80% of rated capacity under the standardized procedure.
That threshold does not mean the battery becomes unusable at 80%.
A battery at 79% or 80% of its original rated capacity can still operate. What has changed is how much energy it can store compared with when it was new, so runtime between charges will generally be lower.
Think of the cycle rating as a standardized durability milestone, not an expiry date.
Is 800 cycles good?
For a covered modern smartphone, 800 cycles is the regulatory baseline you should expect under the applicable ecodesign requirements.
That makes 800 cycles a useful reference point — but not a reason to treat every 800-cycle phone as equally durable in every other respect.
A model rated for at least 1,200 cycles has a declared cycle threshold 50% higher than a model rated for at least 800 cycles:
1,200 / 800 = 1.5
That is a meaningful difference in the standardized battery-durability metric.
It still does not tell you exactly how many calendar years either battery will last, because users consume cycles at different rates and batteries are affected by conditions such as heat, charging behavior and time.
Why FactRated displays "at least" the cycle count
The EPREL smartphone/tablet source field is expressed in full hundreds of cycles. FactRated normalizes that value for display.
A raw value representing 12 hundreds is shown as:

The "at least" wording matters because the regulatory display rounds to the defined hundred-cycle bands. It is more accurate than pretending the battery failed at exactly cycle 1,200.
More cycles do not automatically mean longer runtime per charge
Battery cycle life and battery endurance per charge measure different things.
Imagine two phones:
- Phone A: very long runtime per charge, 800-cycle rating.
- Phone B: shorter runtime per charge, 1,400-cycle rating.
Phone A can be better for a user who needs maximum time away from a charger today. Phone B can be more attractive to a user who wants the battery to retain capacity over a larger number of charge/discharge cycles.
Neither number replaces the other.
Compare standardized runtime rankings
Convert cycles into years carefully
It is tempting to convert cycle count directly into calendar years:
1,000 cycles / 365 = about 2.7 years.
That calculation assumes exactly one full cycle every day, which is rarely a universal use pattern.
Different users expose a battery to very different charge/discharge patterns, temperatures, workloads and calendar aging. The standardized cycle test is not a prediction of one person's daily charging history.
For that reason, FactRated does not publish a universal "this battery lasts X years" conversion.
Use the registered cycle count to compare standardized battery durability, then consider your own use conditions separately.
Battery replaceability changes the ownership equation
Cycle durability matters even more when the battery is difficult to replace.
If a model identifies the battery as user-replaceable, a degraded battery may be easier to renew without replacing the whole phone. But user replaceability is not the only repair consideration: spare-part availability, tools, disassembly depth and repair information also matter.

A high-cycle battery in a phone with short support can still be a poor fit for a user planning very long ownership. A repairable device with only the baseline cycle rating may still be attractive if battery replacement is straightforward.
Charging habits still matter
The standardized cycle rating makes models comparable, but it does not cancel real-world battery chemistry.
The EU ecodesign framework requires manufacturers to provide battery-maintenance information, including known effects from elevated temperatures, charging patterns and fast charging where relevant.
That is a reminder that cycle ratings are test results under defined conditions. Your own thermal environment, charging strategy and usage can affect how the battery ages.
FactRated therefore avoids promising that two users will reach the same capacity after the same calendar time.

If you keep phones for a long time
Prioritize higher cycle endurance, then check software support and repairability.
If you travel frequently
Cycle life is useful, but standardized runtime per charge may matter more day to day.
If you want easy maintenance
Check battery user-replaceability and repairability alongside cycle count.
If you replace phones frequently
A very high cycle rating may matter less to you than other product characteristics — but it still provides useful information about battery durability.
